"The Bombay Sweets’ Doin’ the Jerk at Dawn b/w Breath Control (Heart of a Champion); $5.99 at Treehouse Records Because this local one-man band (Nathan Grumdahl, a veteran of the Dynamiters and Selby Tigers) has recorded a 45 rpm formula for melting away the winter blahs: surf music + garage pop + bright orange vinyl = happy."

Petition for Mike Gunther to open for Ludacris at First Avenue!

Rap superstar Ludacris is performing at First Avenue on Sunday, September 12.

Everyone who was anyone in the Twin Cities earlier this decade knows that much like Jimi Hendrix with "All Along the Watchtower," Minneapolis/St. Paul musician Mike Gunther routinely incorporated what has come to be known as the definitive version of the Luda classic "What's Your Fantasy?" into his early live sets.

It has now been over four years since Gunther's last album ("Burn It Down For the Nails") was released, and over two years since he last performed around town on a regular basis.

It's time for a comeback.

What better place than the First Avenue mainroom stage, opening for Mr. Cris?

Hey... facebook petitions worked for Betty White.

Big (Little) News for Heart of a Champion

Congratulations to HoC co-owner Dan and his beautiful wife Maria! There's going to be little footsteps among all of the new music, re-released vinyl and a photography book that's going to happen over the next few months. Personally, I couldn't be happier for the soon-to-be parents! Stop by Treehouse Records and congratulate the new Dad-to-be.

LOTS of updates coming soon.

P.S. Check out Dan's new blog: http://twinscitizens.blogspot.com/. Apparently, he knows too much about baseball. (I don't think any of my Mets paraphernalia will be worn on the little one. It'll have to stay in New York.)

Evening Rig - Pictures from Crazy Heart

Thank you to the ever so talented Flora Brama for her pictures that captured a great evening.

Sunday, January 10, 2010

The Evening Rig will play an acoustic set prior to the Twin Cities premiere of the new film "Crazy Heart" (nominated for two Golden Globes). They'll play around 6:30 at the Uptown Theater! 2906 Hennepin Ave. S.

The Movie:
Jeff Bridges (The Men Who Stare at Goats, The Big Lebowski) stars as the richly comic, semi-tragic romantic anti-hero Bad Blake in the debut feature film from writer-director Scott Cooper. Bad Blake is a broken-down, hard-living country music singer who's had way too many marriages, far too many years on the road and one too many drinks way too many times. And yet, Bad can’t help but reach for salvation with the help of Jean (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a journalist who discovers the real man behind the musician. As he struggles down the road of redemption, Bad learns the hard way just how tough life can be on one man’s crazy heart. Co-starring Colin Farrell and Robert Duvall.

Director:
Scott Cooper

Cast:
Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Colin Farrell, Robert Duvall, Beth Grant, Sarah Jane Morris, Tom Bower, Annie Corley

8. THE EVENING RIG, "IS DOIN' STUFF" Does Minneapolis really need another semi-twangy, beer-swilling, two-guitar rock band heavily inspired by the Replacements? Color us extra impressed that this quartet found fresh ground in the town's most overtread musical territory. Leading the way for its sophomore disc was the high-revving opening track, "The Steve McQueens," about girls who only fall for manly men. (54)
