Doin' the Jerk at Dawn

HEART OF A CHAMPION, 2010

Bombay Sweets is a Minneapolis band consisting of Nathan Grumdahl (Selby Tigers,Dynamiters) and drummer Jeff Brown (His Mischief). Although the project has expanded beyond Grumdahl’s one-man-band vision, it remains his lovechild. Even with multiple instruments at play, the primary components remain Grumdahl’s guitar and voice. The project is heavily steeped in old 60s records, with R&B-derived rock at its center. Grumdahl’s voice comes across as clear and smooth with a touch of world-weariness and something of a sensual tone, giving a soothing tone that accentuates the melody without distracting from the musical swagger.

The A-side, “Doin’ the Jerk at Dawn” is a 60s-influenced jam with a soothing delivery that, despite its pleasantries, is also unmistakably rock’n’roll. The distortion-heavy guitars find some big hooks, and Grumdahl’s plays this to his advantage, busting out a quick but memorable refrain. The limited instrumentation and lack of any backing vocals gives it a personal, restrained air.

The B-side, “Breath Control,” starts out with some big guitar swagger that quickly morphs into a King Khan and BBQ Show-styled simplicity. It’s predominantly guitar, but Brown’s drums provide a minimal structure to adhere to. It’s a garage rock song that hits all the best elements of the genre: it recalls cliché without actually being one, instead coming across as new in sound with a bouncing, memorable melody derived from repetition of the chorus.

While the pacing differs from his other bands, Bombay Sweets still draws from many of the same influences—this time, though, Grumdahl is emphasizing the softer, melodic side. And he does so without feeling derivative.

Rap superstar Ludacris is performing at First Avenue on Sunday, September 12.

Everyone who was anyone in the Twin Cities earlier this decade knows that much like Jimi Hendrix with "All Along the Watchtower," Minneapolis/St. Paul musician Mike Gunther routinely incorporated what has come to be known as the definitive version of the Luda classic "What's Your Fantasy?" into his early live sets.

It has now been over four years since Gunther's last album ("Burn It Down For the Nails") was released, and over two years since he last performed around town on a regular basis.

It's time for a comeback.

What better place than the First Avenue mainroom stage, opening for Mr. Cris?

Heart of a Champion signs GOST TRIO!

We are thrilled to announce the signing and release of the debut album from Brooklyn's Gost Trio. The CD, titled Miles of Skies of Light (HoC-030) was recorded by Dean Baltulonis (The Hold Steady) and mastered by Dave Gardner (everyone).

Though this is our first time working with any of them, our roots run deep with Gost Trio. The three members of the band (Twin Cities expatriates Frank Bevan, Jacob Sharff, and Andrew Beccone) made up three quarters of Capital!Capital some years back (the fourth member of Capital!Capital, Joe Labatt, contributes "West Coast guitar" on the song "Passenger" on this album). Before that, Frank fronted the Freedom Fighters (Amphetamine Reptile).

Anyway, Gost Trio is returning to play their first show in their native Twin Cities on Saturday, December 26 at the Turf Club in St. Paul, along with our old friends The Dynamiters. This will double as a Gost Trio CD release show, though the album will not see national release until January 2010.

A message from The Evening Rig regarding their plans for Spring 2010:

So, we'd like to get this dog and pony show on the road early 2010 and try to exploit this noise we call music to other parts of the great U S of A.

We are not very savvy when it comes to booking, nor do we know many people outside of our safe zone in the Twin Cities, so any kind of help will be greatly appreciated!!!

Below is a rough idea of what we're thinking. If you can help us get our foot in the door at any of the clubs in said areas, we will buy you drinks, win you carnival stuffed animals, and offer up some delicious deep tissue back rubs...

Farewell, Uptown Bar!

Minneapolis' historic Uptown Bar is closing at the end of the month, and we're proud to be heavily represented on the final week's calendar.

First, The Evening Rig will headline a free show on Tuesday, October 27 along with Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo. (View the Facebook event page here)

On the following night (Wednesday, October 28), Chooglin' is part of a six band bill that also includes Me and My Arrow, Story of the Sea, Speed's the Name, Death Cube, and Alicia Wiley. This one is free if you arrive before 9 PM, and $6 if you show up later.

Finally, The Hawaii Show and friends host the grand finale on Sunday, November 1. Not sure about the cover on this one, but we can promise some unannounced guests. Be there!

Just downloaded the new album from The Evening Rig, a band that grew up in & is still based in my very own little town -- but which I needed an East Coast blogger to clue me into. The blogger in question, Mister Mule, says although he’s very much into the band, he isn’t crazy about the particular performance of the lead-off song from that album that is captured in the video below, to which one might well reply: wow, tough audience!

So you be the judge of whether this vid deserves multiple clicks of the old YouTube replay button because I say it does and this surely makes it so? But anyway, hat tip to Mister Mule, & now I’m off to the Cities for one last big honking Whoamusanyway rooftop garden B-Day drink with Ms. Whoamusanyway on account of, I’m back home AND another year older, all at once.

Our Dear Friend Kelley Lynch passed away from traumatic brain trauma on Sunday, May 24th.

With his passing he gave an incredible gift as a donor to over 60 people, including a 17 year old girl (kidney), a older woman (kidney) and a 56 year old man (liver).

THE EVENING RIG and THE MILLIONTH WORD along with another local band will be performing and a silent auction will be held in Kelley's honor.

From Minneapolis- No other MOG posts showing, so I'm giving them their props. These guys are alt-country, straight up, raunchy, guitar drivin' rock and rollers. I like that about them. They remind me of Wilco at their raunchiest. They can tone it down a bit, but for the most part, their CD hits you in the face and you just get into the great groove they put out. The Evening Rig is … awesome

Of the million-odd discs I’ve received in the last couple weeks, no group has the faded-glory, retro-cool aesthetic down like the Evening Rig. This is weird, considering that this Minneapolis group’s brand of throwback rock is more Replacements than Springsteen (the current generation’s It messiah of the moment).

If you’ll remember — and I’m sure I’ll get a lot of “gruff” for this — the Land of 10,000 Lakes housed a lot of college radio faves back in the late ’80s, yet none of them were too keen in the art department. (Save for the ’Mats’ “Don’t Tell a Soul,” of course. Love that one.)

But, as some unwise people have said throughout my lifetime, you’re never supposed to judge anything by its cover, so I’ll get off that tangent and onto why all the praise-worthy artwork was created in the first place: the Evening Rig’s music.

Which is awesome.

Not only do these cool kids match Paul Westerberg, Chris Mars and the Stinson brothers’ early whiskey-soaked intensity, but they also have a soft spot for that legendary foursome’s post-Twin/Tone radio-ready gems.

This, too, is awesome.

So, heading into this fancy new Evening Rig disc — which, while I was a fan of “Never Been’er,” finds the group ready to take on the world — you’re treated to heatwave blockbusters (“The Hilltop Pines,” “How Does She Do It?”), dirt-road driving music (“A Girl Important,” “In Spite of All That Happened”) and more than a few songs dedicated to drinking (most notably “Goddamn, I Need a Drink”).

Another amazing thing about this disc is that it has a sly pop sheen not heard since Westerberg ventured out on his own in the early ’90s — you know, when groups like the Gin Blossoms were dominating the airwaves. (Pretty much everything I said in my review of “Sweet Precious Time” by Ben Durbin’s Modern Antiques can be applied here.)

In other words, get this one now.

The Evening Rig

I think the band The Evening Rig is my new Favourite Band In The World.

I don't visit MySpace, but I'm told they have a page here.

"Right Where She Wants Me" and "The Steve McQueens" are two tunes from their newest longplayer that move me. But "Hilltop Pines" from a prior record grabs my 'nads as well.

I think we can expect a May Bees-style push in the near future. . . .

except I think this music may appeal to way more people who read this than Drop Little Boy; that could be because my friends love the Replacements, Jason and the Nashville Scorchers, the Old '97s, and Tommy Keene a little more than Frank Black and the Pixies.

I love all of that shit, tough guy. . . .

Another great review of The Evening Rig Is Doin' Stuff, this one from Chris Mattern of Jersey Beat:

This really is some good pop music. I don't generally get into this sort of thing, but The Evening Rig, hailing from Minneapolis Minnesota write great songs, and play them in a manner that isn't necessarily aggressive, but isn't wimpy either, and I like it! Vocalist Jason Miller has a great warm voice, and much like all great pop song writers The Evening Rig know how to construct a memorable chorus. “The Hilltop Pines” is probably one of the best pure pop songs I have heard in ages and reminds me of The Replacements meets John Mellencamp. Jason has one of those addicting voices that make you want to hang onto every word he sings. Reminiscent of 90's power pop like Placebo and Urge Overkill, but urgent and modern enough to keep my interest, The Evening Rig's sophomore effort is a solid record with very little filler. A few of the later tracks such as “A Girl Important” take you down a folky almost country, (but not too country) road, and segue beautifully back into catchy up beat pop rock. While “Goddamn I Could Use A Drink” gives us a glimpse of a band that understands the pop beauty that can be found in simple raw blues progressions. “We Got Tonight” is the perfect closer to this surprisingly awesome pop journey. I'd suggest this record to anyone that can appreciate great song writing, simple yet impressive musicianship, and likes to tone it down and relax to some soothing yet edgy pop tunes from time to time.

With beer cans and a faux-beer logo on their CD jacket and new tracks called "Bartender" and "Goddamn, I Could Use a Drink," the Evening Rig could have gone onstage sloppy drunk for their CD party last Saturday in the Entry and cemented their reputation as a next-wave Replacements. Instead, the quartet played the songs on its new album "Is Doing Stuff" with intensity and heart, especially the urgent twang-rocker "The Steve McQueens," which deserves ample radio play. Frontman Jason Miller sounded apologetic when he said, "We're going to slow it down," but mellower tunes such as "Half Asleep" also came off beautifully. The Rig's next show is the MoreCowbell.net fifth anniversary show next Thursday at the Turf.

Nothin' like waiting 'til the last minute! The Evening Rig will be playing two shows at the Belmont in Austin during South By Southwest. The shows are on Tuesday, March 17 and Wednesday, March 18. Times TBA. The Belmont is at 305 W 6th St. Both Belmont shows are FREE and open to the public (not SXSW-sanctioned, no wristbands required).

Fans of local bar rock band the Evening Rig will be delighted to hear that the group is releasing their next album, Is Doin' Stuff, on March 27 at the Entry. The hardworking folks over at Switchblade Comb have an exclusive preview track from the forthcoming album, so head over there to sample "The Hilltop Pines."Personally, I was most excited to catch a glimpse of the new album artwork, which is a continuation of the vintage photograph theme that they started with their debut album, 2007's Never Been'er.

There's something about these old photographs that captures the Evening Rig's worn-in, beer-soaked sound perfectly. Here's a graphic of the new album cover:
